Guideline rates (inc VAT)
The two biggest cost drivers are the surface type and whether the existing base can be reused. Laying over a sound base is the most economical option; a full excavation and new permeable sub-base costs more because of the groundwork, materials and waste removal involved.
- Resin driveway over a sound existing base — from £60 per m². Where your current concrete or tarmac is structurally sound and can be resurfaced directly.
- Resin driveway with a new excavated base — from £180 per m². Full dig-out, permeable sub-base, edgings and drainage built from scratch.
- Paths & patios over a sound base — from £54 per m².
- Paths & patios with full excavation — from £170 per m².
These figures are guidelines only. They are indicative starting rates and are non-binding. Your actual price depends on a site inspection — including access, drainage, ground conditions, edgings and the finish you choose.
Why two driveways rarely cost the same
Square metres are only the starting point. The condition of the existing base is usually the single biggest factor: reusing a sound base avoids excavation and waste-removal costs, while a failed base needs digging out and rebuilding. Beyond that, narrow or awkward access can add labour, drainage and edging details vary by site, and premium aggregates or borders cost more than standard blends. A short driveway can also carry a higher per-metre rate than a large one, because set-up and mobilisation are spread over a smaller area.
