Where resin wins

The differences that actually matter

Concrete cracks, and pattern imprinted concrete shows it

Concrete is rigid. Ground moves — with moisture, with frost, with tree roots, and Northamptonshire has plenty of clay to move with. That is why concrete slabs are laid with movement joints designed in, and why cracks appear anyway when the ground does something the joints did not anticipate. On plain concrete a crack is untidy. On pattern imprinted concrete it is worse, because it runs straight through a moulded pattern that is pretending to be individual stones, and there is no way to repair it invisibly.

The resealing cycle nobody mentions at the quote stage

Pattern imprinted concrete gets its colour and its sheen from a surface treatment, and that treatment is consumable. It wears under tyres and UV, so it needs stripping and resealing periodically to keep looking like the photograph you were shown. Skip it and the colour goes patchy and flat, and the surface can get slippery as the worn sealer glazes. Resin bound has no coating: the colour is the actual stone, all the way through the depth of the surface, so there is nothing to reseal and nothing to wear off.

Permeability, again, decides the planning question

Both plain and pattern imprinted concrete are impermeable. Lay more than five square metres of impermeable surface at the front of a house in England without directing run-off to a permeable area within your boundary, and you generally need planning permission. Resin bound is permeable, so a front driveway normally falls within permitted development at any size.

Being straight with you

When concrete is the better choice

If you need a structural slab rather than a driveway surface — something that will take repeated heavy commercial vehicle loading, a plant or machinery standing, a genuine industrial yard — reinforced concrete is the right specification and resin bound is not. Resin bound is a surface course laid over a base; it does not replace a load-bearing slab.

Plain concrete is also hard to beat on cost for large utilitarian areas where appearance genuinely does not matter.

Common questions

Can you lay resin bound over an existing concrete driveway?
Very often, yes — sound concrete is one of the best bases there is. Provided it is stable and not badly cracked or heaving, we can lay directly over it, which avoids excavation and waste removal and brings the job in around our lower guideline rate of about £60 per m² including VAT. Existing movement joints need treating correctly, which is part of the survey.
Can you cover pattern imprinted concrete with resin?
Usually, provided the concrete beneath is structurally sound. It is a common reason people call us — the imprinting has faded or the sealer has worn and they want out of the resealing cycle. The imprinted texture has to be assessed and prepared properly first, so it is a survey job rather than a phone quote.
Does resin bound crack like concrete?
Not in the same way. Resin bound is a flexible surface course, so it does not develop the shrinkage and movement cracking that a rigid concrete slab does. What it does depend on is the base underneath — if a base moves significantly, any surface laid on it will show it, which is why we specify and build the base properly rather than treating it as an afterthought.
